125 rue Corlin
69400 Villefranche-sur-Saône
Recently restored, this courtyard was at the height of its glory at the end of the 15th century when Claude Gaspard, “échevin” of Villefranche (municipal magistrate) and “seigneur du Sou” (Lord of the Treasury) built it.
The buildings were remodelled in 1500 by Claude Gaspard, a wealthy merchant and city alderman. Originally, it was accessible via the Rue Nationale and the Rue de derrière, which is now the only access to the courtyard.
The courtyard façade, dating from the 15th century, comprises three levels of mullioned windows framed by deep mouldings that intersect at the corners. The whole is crowned by exceptional decoration in the medieval vocabulary: braced arches with rampant cabbages.
