Beaujolais is bordered on its entire eastern bank by the Saône and on the other side of the river is the vast Ain Plain.
Nevertheless, this river boundary does not stop you from crossing to our neighbours in the Ain Department!
To the south, you can stop off in the Town and Land of Art and History, in particular in Trévoux, declared the Most Beautiful Detours in France, and also visit Ars, a sanctuary town in memory of the Curé d'Ars.
The medieval city of Pérouges is only a few kilometres away and it is difficult to miss it. This hilltop village, its history and heritage have earned it the status of one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. All you have to do is wander through the cobbled streets to take a leap in time! You should definitely make a gourmet stop to taste the Pérouges sugar tart!
Further up the Saône, in the Dombes, is the little Venice of the Ain: Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, also known as one of the Most Beautiful Detours in France. A stopover here is a time to capture a photo and stroll to the rhythm of half-timbered houses, suspension bridges and other flowery alleys. You will also discover the ancient Halles! There is one of the most beautiful markets in the Rhône-Alpes region held every Saturday morning. The atmosphere is friendly and conducive for networking and exchanges with the producers.
It should be noted that the Ain region abounds in mouth-watering products: fish from the Dombes, chicken from Bresse, cream and butter from Bresse, cheeses, cans from Dombes, cardons from the Val de Saône, you name it! There is something for everyone! The market is also famous for its live poultry!
You will find other birds in Villars Les Dombes! In the Parc des Oiseaux, you can admire more than 300 birds species from all over the world spread over a 35 hectar park. In summer, you can discover the Musicales du Parc by night while enjoying the concerts. Renowned artists like Zazie, Yannick Noah, Paolo Conte, Vitaa and Slimane share this exceptional scene on the edge of a pond.
